While working for an Indianapolis mechanical contractor on one job that involved a cluster of five schools, he first saw the need for an adjustable size pipe hanger. The job needed multiple sizes and styles of hangers at different locations, and the task of getting the correct sizes or styles of hanger to the correct places efficiently was impossible. This is where he first saw what a great advantage it would be to have one hanger that would fit multiple sizes and do multiple tasks.

The Boa hanger was developed by James Watt with help from his son Kevin. Jim had over 30 years of experience in the HVAC, mechanical and plumbing trades. He worked for five mechanical contractors in the Indianapolis area and with the United States Army. At each of these employers, there was a common situation that frustrated Jim – jobs would be delayed because of problems with pipe hangers. These problems took several forms. Even though there were many pipe hangers on the job site ready to be used, they were the wrong size or wrong style. The required size or style would have to be ordered and the project would be delayed while waiting for these hangers to arrive. When the pipe hangers did arrive, there was a chance that the wrong size pipe hanger was ordered which extended the delay further. To avoid a shortage, a surplus of each size of pipe hanger could be ordered at the start of the project. But this solution had its own problem. Near the end of the project, it would be discovered that the remaining pipe hangers had rusted while in storage, lost parts, or otherwise become damaged, which required additional hangers to be ordered. But recently, Jim and Kevin created a pipe hanger that would help plumbers, pipe fitters and electricians avoid the problems that had for so long frustrated Jim. That pipe hanger is the BOA^TM hanger. It adjusts. It adjusts! A single BOA^TM hanger can support several diameters of pipe and be used on fittings. As a result, fewer varieties of pipe hangers are required at a job site. Stocking is easier. Planning is easier.
